SEA Asst Dean Dr. Barroca and His Student Receive IPOPHIL Patent

The University community congratulates Dr. Renyl B. Barroca, Assistant Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture, for his significant achievement in securing a patent for the invention titled “A Computer-Implemented Method for Tracking the Sun.”

This patent, awarded to Dr. Barroca and his former graduate student, Dr. French Maverick Lorilla (University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines), was issued by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, Bureau of Patents. The patent is valid for the period from 27 September 2024 to 23 September 2041.

The invention is described in the abstract summary as relating generally to “methods for controlling the position of a system, and more particularly, to a computer-implemented method for tracking the sun using machine vision. When executed by a computing device, the system tracks the centroid of the sun in real time based on actual images captured directly from the sun. Commands are sent from the computing device to the azimuth servo motor and elevation servo motor to maintain continuous tracking of the sun’s centroid position.”

The University community celebrates this outstanding accomplishment and commends Dr. Barroca and Dr. Lorilla for their innovation and contribution to scientific advancement.
